World & History · A Decembers list

Every state you've set foot in

The first time you crossed a state line and saw the welcome sign, maybe from the back seat of a station wagon. The gas station where you stretched your legs. The one road trip the whole family still argues about.

This is the list for all of them, one state at a time. A flag, who was with you, and the thing you still remember.

Where this list lives

This is a list in Decembers — the place a life gets written down one question at a time.

Decembers asks the questions no one thought to ask, keeps the answers in one permanent Chronicle, and holds them on one Timeline that reads in order. You answer. Decembers does the writing.

One line is enough

Name one state and the whole trip comes back titlewho drove, what was on the radio, the motel with the blinking sign, the argument over which exit to take.

A passport stamp tells you a date and a border. It says nothing about the diner in Tennessee where the waitress called everyone honey, or the thunderstorm that rolled across the Kansas plains while you watched from the car. The states you've been to are a map of the people you went with and the reasons you went: a wedding, a funeral, a new job, a long-promised vacation, a drive just to see what was out there.

Nobody sits down to write the history of their travels, and the years blur the order of things. But one state at a time is easy. You remember Ohio because of the cousins. You remember Montana because of the sky. Put each one down with its flag and the one moment that stuck, and before long you've drawn the whole shape of where a life has been.

What ends up next to each flag

Who was in the car

Most states come tied to people. The parents who drove the first big trip, the friend who rode shotgun across three states in a weekend, the kids in the back asking how much longer. Name them and the state stops being a place on a map and becomes a day you spent together.

What took you there

A honeymoon, a reunion, a conference, a move. Some states you chose and some you only passed through on the way to somewhere else. The reason is half the memory titlethe wedding in Georgia, the training base in Texas, the long drive to see a dying relative one last time.

The moment that stuck

Everyone keeps one image from a place. The first sight of the ocean from a California cliff, a storm over the desert, a small-town parade you stumbled into. It's rarely the famous landmark. It's the thing you didn't plan for and never forgot.

Region by region

Northeast
Stone walls, fall foliage, and the crowded old cities titlea drive up the coast or a first trip to see the Statue of Liberty from the ferry.
The South
The long humid summers, barbecue off the highway, and family roots that pull people back to Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee.
The Midwest
Flat highways through corn and wheat, a fair in August, and the state where the cousins or the in-laws always lived.
The West
The national parks, the open desert, and the two-lane roads where you could drive an hour without seeing another car.
The Pacific Coast
The first sight of the ocean from the other side, redwoods, and the fog rolling into San Francisco Bay.
Alaska & Hawaii
The far trips you saved up for titlea glacier cruise or a week on the islands, the ones that finished the map.
