World & History · A Decembers list

Every country you've set foot in

The stamp in the old passport, the train you caught at dawn, the market where nobody spoke your language and you bought bread anyway. Each place left something you still carry.

This is the list for all of them, one country at a time e a line for the ones you passed through, a few more for the ones that changed you.

Where this list lives

This is a list in Decembers — the place a life gets written down one question at a time.

Decembers asks the questions no one thought to ask, keeps the answers in one permanent Chronicle, and holds them on one Timeline that reads in order. You answer. Decembers does the writing.

One line is enough

Write down one country and the rest come with it e the smell of the airport, the coins left in a drawer, the face of whoever was standing next to you when you first looked up.

A passport records the date you entered and the date you left, and nothing else. It doesn't hold the argument you had over the map, or the meal you still describe to people thirty years later, or the way the light fell differently than it ever had at home. Those things live only in the telling, and the telling fades unless somebody sets it down.

A whole travel memoir never gets written e it's too big, and you were never sure where to start. But a single country is an easy thing to name. You write where you went, who was beside you, and the one moment that stuck, and then you move to the next. One line at a time, a map of your life takes shape that no document in a drawer could ever hold.

What ends up on this list

The ones you went to for a reason

A posting overseas. A daughter's semester abroad you flew out to visit. A conference that put you in a city for four days, three of them in meeting rooms. The reason you went often has nothing to do with what you remember.

The ones you nearly forgot

A layover long enough to leave the airport. A border town you crossed into on a dare. A cruise stop where you had six hours and spent them on a beach whose name you never learned. They count. Set them down before they slip.

The ones that changed how you saw things

The country where you understood, for the first time, how big the world actually was. Where the food, the noise, the faces made your own street look small. You came home different, and you've been chasing that feeling ever since.

Region by region

North America
The drives across the border, the national parks, the fishing trip to Canada where the guide knew every lake by its first name.
Latin America
The honeymoon in Mexico, the mission trip to Guatemala, the retirement everyone said you should take in Costa Rica.
Europe
The military posting in Germany, the backpacking summer, the anniversary trip through Tuscany with a guidebook falling apart at the spine.
Asia
The work assignment in Tokyo, the temples in Thailand, the overnight train where you shared tea with strangers and understood none of it.
Africa
The safari you saved years for, the Peace Corps years, the coast where the water was warmer than any you'd known.
Oceania
The long flight to Australia, the reef, the New Zealand hills that looked borrowed from a movie set.
